Kuching...Kuching...Kuching Part 1

Couple of weeks back, friends from Taylor's SJ came down to dear Kuching for the Rainforest World Music Festival 2005, so along with their classmates (and hosts) John, Yun and Perry, I joined in the fun cause I was bored to death at home doing nothing all day. So this is my day to day account of what occured during that trip. And if you want to know, I took so long putting this post up because I couldn't get the pictures uploaded right. hehe =)

Day 1 - 7.7.05

Yun decided to go to Matang Wildlife Center today. Give those semenanjung fellas a taste of Borneo's cold mountain streams, big huge orang utans, and the opportunity to catch a glimpse of hornbills. Torturous for me, I had to wake up at 6.30am to follow my dad to her place! No other mode of transport. So I had to grudgingly drag myself out of bed to meet at her place. So, first thing on the agenda this morning? Sarawak laksa. Yeap, you heard me. Sarawak's very own laksa. Honestly, it tastes great (albeit being unhealthy).

Moving on....

Group pic! There was suppose to be a hornbill in the back.... but it flew away when the picture was taken. Anyway left to right features me, John, Szu Lyn, Perry, Yun, Kok, Tze Yong, Joo Yin, Yinn Khurn and Keat Seong. Matang WIldlife Center has this small zoo there. If you can even call if a zoo. Maintenance isn't that great, nothing like Singapore National Zoo which i went to just two weeks before this. They do have this great big orang utan though, with only four fingers on his left hand cause one had to be removed in order to prevent a disease from spreading. Too bad I don't have a shot of that big guy.

Just had to put this one in. Joo Yin's eating lunch and Keat Seong's fooling around.

Lunch time! Everyone's eating char siew rice, recommended by Perry. So Yun went all the way to Carpenter's Street to pack up ten packets, and guess what... she packed up the wrong kind. Well, that's according to Perry. I've never tried it, so I don't know the difference.

Hah! First order of entertainment for today? Catching fish! And not to waste any food, Perry used rice as bait and plastic blags as nets. Here's Perry and Kok at their game. They were the best fishermen out there that day.

Here's the losing team. Erm, I mean only other team. Total number of fish? Zero! Yun insisted that using a shirt was more effective than using plastic bags to catch the fish. So Yinn Khurn lent his shirt to their cause. Lesson learnt today?? Plastic bags work just fine.

Second order of entertainment? Finding flat smooth rocks to throw against the water. You know, when it goes pop pop pop over the surface of the water. So here's the champion for game number two, Lee Tze Yong with a record of six pops. Here, he sucks in his breath "OooOoo.."

And there the rock goes! Pop! Pop! Pop! Haha =)

Third order of entertainment? Pretty obvious isn't it. Rock collecting! Some mad fellas evolved the game of rock-throwing to this. See, they couldn't find perfect flat stones all the time right? So this is what they resorted to. I can't remember whose stash this is, but I remember the winner being Yinn Khurn. Kok: "It's got all the things you want in a rock. It stands, is beautiful and it's flat!" Something like that.

Hah! Another form of entertainment.... remember people, such vanity is disapproved of. Hehe =) Guess who's initials/names those are.

So, after all that, we zoomed all the way home for a good shower and proceeded to dinner at Uncle Richard's (Yun's dad) shop. Ahaha, as the days go by, you'll find that every place we go to is suggested by Yun, and everything to do with meals is suggested by Perry (apart from today). Go figure. Post-dinner fun? Check it out.

Sampan ride!! At Kuching's famous waterfront. Hmmm, Yih Seong and Denise have been there. Don't know about the rest of you readers. Here's everyone (taken by me) in the sampan. Had to do lots of shifting about as our weight caused the boat to shake rather badly from side to side. SO moving on.... there was this park across the river. Rather dark though, poorly lighted. Anyway, a bunch of ten teens? We'll find our fun. Hehe =)

Heh heh!! Naughty fellas!! Luckily we didn't get caught pants down by any security officers in that park. It was right next to the astana furthermore! There's no need to mention who's who eh? Just take a hard look!

Let's turn in the culprits! Haha, they'll be our scapegoats today. This picture is taken outside the guardhouse of the astana. So that's it for this day. Everyone's pretty tired I guess. And rest is badly needed if we're going to have lots of fun tomorrow as well. Watch out for part 2!
